A RIVER RUNS THROUGH
Painting and words by Michelle McClunan
One of the up-sides to writing these newsletters is that I get to stop the outer noise of my life and ponder things more deeply and intensely than usual…deep and intense both being characteristics of Scorpio, which is our theme for November.
There’s a huge focus on the water element over the next few weeks, starting with an intense, transformational, but healing New Moon on the 31st October. Mercury joins the sun and the moon in Scorpio and the trio form a flowing aspect to mystical, mysterious Neptune in Pisces.
Water… water… everywhere… can you feel it?
How does the water element relate to us personally ? It represents feelings, emotions, sensitivity, compassion, empathy, flow, nurturing, connection to all that is, purification, cleaning, clearing, power, tenacity. If water isn’t channelled, it can be overwhelming, scary and unpredictable and of course, it can lead to destruction.
Picture the life of a river in your mind’s eye. Starting off as a little spring, full of potential, it grows into a stream and then might become a happy babbling brook. With each big rain, the stream may swell, until it becomes a raging river… a powerful, ambitious force, flowing with an intensity that will burst its banks, should they be too narrow to contain it. The river tenaciously, carves its way through the landscape, moving huge boulders, trees or anything else in its way. At other times, this very same river might almost completely dry up or stop and become stagnant, until the next rains arrive.
The river is never ever the same, not even for a moment. It will encounter obstacles, but will almost always find a way under, through or around them. The interesting thing about water is that it changes state but it never dies.
Much like us!
Sometimes the river might get dammed up by us humans, so as to keep it all in one place. Imagine you as a happy babbling little river, trundling along over the rocks… flowing… free to be. Suddenly you meet a wall and there seems to be no way of getting through it. Feel what that feels like in your body. Now imagine the sluice gates opening, so the river can flow again. How does that feel?
When I look at the astrology of the next few weeks, it feels to me that the new moon and her flowing aspects to Neptune, are opening the sluice gates, as it were, giving us the opportunity to clear what we need to clear, release the pressure and get back into the flow.
Perhaps you’ve been experiencing water issues lately…flooding, mud, geysers bursting, pipes getting blocked or drying up. Or… you might have issues with your body’s plumbing system? Any of these could suggest that your ”water might be out of whack”
If you feel like your banks are bursting, you may find that you’ve dammed up some old emotions that now need to be felt and released. If you feel stagnant, you might need to shine a light on the nooks and crannies of your body, mind and soul, to see if there’s anything there that might be making you toxic. If you feel dry, stagnant or uninspired, you might need some nourishing – time out, creative expression, long hot baths, or you might need to drink more water – to get the flow going again.
Back to the New Moon and the Astrology for November.
With Mercury involved with this new moon, we have the opportunity of reaching a deeper level of understanding about the way we communication, thoughts and our core belief systems.
We also have Venus (the planet of love and money) in a close dance with Saturn in Sagittarius. This can mean that we feel limited financially or that relationships feels restrictive. And/or it can mean that we have an opportunity to bring maturity and stability to our relationships with others and our money.
The last few months have been really, really difficult for many. Our planet and our country is in crisis. It almost feels like we are reaching some kind of a tipping point. Many of us have been feeling really anxious, irritated or flat out pissed off of late, with a sort of impending doom permeating the atmosphere (especially last week).
Another theme that’s been coming up often is the underlying fear that we might be missing or have already missed, the boat in our lives. If it’s any consolation… you can’t miss the boat, because you’re already on it!
The best thing we can all do during these times is to stay on the boat, with as much presence as possible, and use the navigational equipment we have at our disposal to help us stay in the flow and steer our way through the fog. If we resist the flow of the river, or try and go upstream, there’s a good chance we will feel like we are unravelling.
Our feelings and intuition are our navigational equipment, so when we ignore them, there’s a good chance we might drift off course for a while.
The new moon, through its contact with Neptune is suggesting that there is an opening to really connect with our intuition and to unseen realms as well.
Pause, breathe, connect with your body, let whatever arises to just be, soften, breathe, flow with it, breathe again… Take time to connect to Source, / The Divine / Your guides/ Your Ancestors/ the Angelic Realm and ask for help. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes forget to ask.
After you’ve made your request, let it go and pay attention to your dreams, to symbols and signs, chance meetings and sudden intuitive flashes or knowings. Don’t chase them down – let them come out of the mist.
