IT’S TIME TO BREAK FREE!

On the 28th January, we have a new moon in freedom-loving Aquarius, which  officially ushers in the year of the Fire Rooster. If you’ve been feeling tired and jaded and  that you’re still in transition between 2015 and 2016, this might explain why.

New moons always indicate the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one, a time to reassess, let go and welcome in the new.

This new moon lies at the midpoint between Venus and Saturn, who are in an exact square to each other right now. This can bring to the fore  issues, concerns and fears around money, security and/or relationships. There may be a feeling of needing more than you have, or feeling burdened, tired or stuck in any of these areas.

Let’s investigate this a little further.

SATURN

Saturn is often viewed as a stern, finger-wagging father figure, who lectures us on where we seem to be failing  and gives advice about what we could be doing better. He can issue strict curfews and make us feel incapable, lazy, limited and generally “not good enough”.

However, it all depends on how we perceive him

Old Cronos is currently travelling through the expansive, optimistic sign of Sagittarius and although the two are unlikely bedfellows, when we combine their energy, we find the wise teacher, who provides us with challenges and tests, in order to help us stretch past our existing limitations and mature into our next level of being.

VENUS

Venus  represents  one aspect of the feminine and is all about relationships, love, money, self-worth, security and value.  She is currently swimming through Pisces, along with Mars – which brings us tenderness, imagination, intuition, creativity, compassion, sensitivity and vulnerability. The lover within us longs for depth of connection, which can be hard to define and satisfy. The shadow part of her journey through Pisces is  evasion, slipperiness, addiction, escapism and victimisation.

SATURN VENUS SQUARE

When these energies are blended together, we are presented with the opportunity to look at :

  • The challenges/ limitations/ fears that may arise around our attitudes and beliefs about money, security and/or love
  • Where we are evasive, addicted, non-committal, deluded or victimised
  • Where we are too hard or merciless on ourselves
  • How we can embrace the creative, intuitive, vulnerable sides of ourselves with a deeper level of maturity and understanding

NEW MOON IN AQUARIUS

The New Moon in Aquarius steps in here to  assist us in detaching enough so as to see things from a different perspective.  When we can lift ourselves out of the quagmire of our issues and put ourselves into the role of the compassionate observer,  we are able to clearly  see what’s actually going on and what we can do about it.

This new moon energy is revolutionary, rebellious and maverick. It refuses to conform to the status quo or to ancient paradigms, patterns and limitations. It dares us to stand up for what we truly believe in and unravel the ropes that bind us.

However, In order for us to stand up for ourselves and initiate change, we need to first understand what our perceived limitations are.

ELEPHANTS

When  elephants live in captivity, they’re tied to trees (sob)  with  strong ropes every night. Because it’s their nature to be free,  baby elephants will continually try to break away, until they realise that it’s futile , give up and resign themselves to staying put.

The interesting thing is that they are fully grown, even though they have the power to totally uproot the tree, they will not even attempt to break free. This is because their perception, which was set in place while they were babies, is that they cannot escape.

AND US?

Well, we all have illusory boundaries, fears and limitations, which were created in the past.

However, we also have the ability to see them and set ourselves free.

I see the energies of the moment as providing us with a chance to see, connect with and acknowledge  (Aquarius) the perceived limitations, insecurities, fears that bind us so tightly.  We can then  connect with the wise teacher (Saturn) and the gentle loving Feminine  (Venus) who live inside us and gently start to break the bonds that tie us so tightly and realign with our true state, which is unfettered and free.

Also on the day of the new moon,  Mars (the masculine)  moves out of Pisces and into Aries. Venus joins him on the 4th February.  This fiery energy could bring some volatility (or passion) in relationships, but also has the potential to catapult us forward into the year.

New Moon in Aquarius 8th February

magic happens

On Monday 8th February, we have a new moon in Aquarius, the sign of the maverick, the visionary, the freedom lover, the inventor. If there’s one sign that hates limitations of all kinds and has perfected the art of leaping out of, or getting rid of the box altogether, it’s Aquarius.  When the sun and moon are bopping along together in this sign, we’re all infused with some of this free spirit energy and are able to rise above our normal daily lives, get some perspective and re-envision them with new vigour and vitality.

However, there often seem to be a few issues with those wonderful new visions we have for our lives. Even though they look and sound really magnificent, they often seem to come to nought, as we sabotage them before they can start to manifest.   Have you ever wondered why we shoot ourselves in the feet like that?  Perhaps one reason is that in order to start the new, very often we have to end something that isn’t working, confront the unpleasant, or eject ourselves out of a comfort zone and enter into a place of uncertainty. Whenever we set new intentions, we’re inviting change of some kind and that in itself can be terrifying.

And so… as those (usually subconscious) fears hammer away underneath the surface, our visions for a better, fuller, more expanded life come grinding to a halt… and we keep doing the same old things in the same old way, almost by rote. The same old, same old song is our comfort zone and, even though its often anything but comfortable, its familiar… better the devil you know and all that.  Although there’s nothing wrong with comfort  per say, comfort zones can become prisons in their own right.  We stick with things we know, lest we upset the apple cart, but in the process, we stop growing and become stagnant.

When you think about it, us humans spend an awful lot of time, energy and money surrounding ourselves with things and situations that make our lives easier and more comfortable, which is fine!  But isn’t it interesting that we can’t wait to escape those very things and situations to go on our next holiday?

The vast majority of people I interact with, love to travel, or at least, that’s what I see every time I look at the vision boards we create, which are always plastered with pictures of far-away places. I had a  client the other day who said she was suffering from “far away” sickness, which I can relate to completely!

Let’s unpack that for a few moments.  Why do we so love to explore and adventure?

For me, it’s about that sense of newness and excitement I feel, when I wake up in a brand new  place. The familiar comforts are gone, so I need to stretch myself … to find breakfast, make my way across a city or a new landscape, speak to strangers who I normally wouldn’t engage with,  eat different foods, work out  strange currencies, maybe negotiate with people who don’t speak my language and then fall into strange  bed, exhausted, but happy… heart and mind expanded…  excited about the next day’s adventures. Sometimes these experiences aren’t comfortable at all, but they enliven me like nothing else! The interesting this is that melancholies, limitations, doubts, fears and even aches and pains often seem to magically disappear…only to return when I’m back to the same old/same old,

When we push the limits they move – and this new moon is suggesting  that we do just that. With it being in a tricky relationship with it’s ruler Uranus, as well as with  fiery, impatient Mars, things in our comfort zones are likely to get a wee bit prickly. If you’re feeling irritated, nervous, anxious, aggravated or even more angry than normal, it’s probably because in at least one area of your life, you’re feeling stuck or limited. In that one place ,you might realise that you’re repeating things ad-nauseum or slipping into the same old behaviours,  which are really starting to wear you down. As they say, insanity means doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.  A word of caution, around the new moon, the intensity in our relationships will be turned up a few notches, so it can be very easy to project our issues onto significant others, …  let’s all take a few  deep breaths  before we lash out at our nearest and dearest.

How best to diffuse this energy?  By infusing some “new” into our daily lives, so we don’t feel like we’re existing from Friday to Friday.  How about pretending that you’ve just arrived in your city or home town for the first time. What if you were to see it through the eyes of somebody who had travelled half way across the world to experience it?  Where would you go? How about a new beach  river, restaurant, park or art exhibition that you’ve never been to?  What about eating some local food or engaging with people outside of your culture?  Most of us do exactly this when people visit us from other parts of the world, so why don’t we do it for ourselves?

Take some time this month to reflect on the area/s of your life where you might feel stuck, limited or just too damned comfortable. And then take some bold steps  to stride out of those comfort zones. You might want to start small –  take a different route to work, change your hairstyle, buy something to wear that sets you apart from the rest, try a new recipe, start a conversation with a stranger and then move on to bigger things. The good news is that each and every time we do something new, we literally start to form new neural pathways in our brains, which get stronger and stronger each time we practice. Eventually, if we work on stretching ourselves, we won’t be afraid of anything! Imagine that!

It reminds me of a young chap I met a few years ago who described how he had always been afraid of approaching girls, because they might reject him. When he realised that he was holding himself back, he decided to escape his comfort zone and go and talk to one. After the first time, it got easier and easier. And here’s the kicker – he told me that he realised that even if they rejected him, by confronting his fear, he had expanded, so it didn’t actually matter what the outcome was at the end of the day. Artists, sportspeople and business people of all kinds experience this all the time, as they need to constantly try new things and stretch their limits in order to stay in the game.

I’m running two workshops on Finding the Magic – Escaping your comfort zones – one in February and one in March. See below in the body of the newsletter or email me for details. In this one day workshop, we’ll  playfully explore this theme through group-work, visualisation, journalling and, of course, art. By doing some gentle yoga for the soul, we will streeetch ourselves from our Comfort Zones into our Magic Zones.

Let’s follow the Magic!

New Moon and Mercury Retrograde – 20th/21st January 2015

Waking moonHi all – here’s a quick update – The 20th January presents us with the first New Moon of the year and it’s a Supermoon at that.  At 0 degrees Aquarius, this is the fifth new moon in a row that has fallen within 0 and 1 degree of a sign, suggesting that we are living in a time when powerful shifts and new beginnings are possible and probable! The new moon will be closely followed by Mercury starting its retrograde journey tomorrow and only turning direct again on the 13th February.
We all know about the difficult effects of Mercury Retrograde in the form of lost data, missed flights and electronics giving up the ghost… but many of us miss it’s gifts. As the Christmas / New Year hype settles, this is time to get down to business and review all the grand schemes and intentions we’ve put in place. How are they holding up?
Mercury governs our rational minds and when it turns retrograde, we get to reflect on where we are now, re-consider, reassess and re-envision. If our good intentions have already fallen by the wayside, we need to look at the thought patterns which may be running the show from behind the scenes. If our intention is to bring something new into our lives,  we need to be living from that place, vibrating on that level. Please see below for information on the Law of Attraction Mandala workshop I’m running on 20th February or email me for details on michellemcclunan@gmail.com.
Mercury is, as we speak, travelling along with the sun, the moon and Venus in visionary Aquarius. The contemporary ruler of Aquarius is Uranus, which is currently sitting at the same degree of Aries as the south node. The South Node represents past conditioning and karma and that’s what’s being radically brought to the surface right now – so  if ancient dramas are playing out, that’s why.
What this is telling us  as I see it, is that we are being presented with an opportunity to wake up, to step out of the box (Aquarius), find a higher vantage point and consider what is holding us back (South Node) . The next few weeks presents us with an opportunity to break free (Uranus) from old conditioning (South Node) and choose a brand new different pathway (Aries) … to really become the change we want to see in the world. If we don’t break free from past expectations and beliefs, it’s really not possible to move forward. As the adage goes “If you want something different, do something different”
So… whenever we find ourselves judging something outside of ourselves, we get to toddle off to our higher viewpoint and  ask where and how we can change that exact thing inside ourselves. We have a lot of really effective triggers in good old South Africa. Eg the Government should be more efficient and forward thinking -– can lead to us questioning where we can be more efficient and forward thinking.. Or XYZ should be considerate could be adjusted to “where can I be more considerate”
Robert of the Aquarius Papers puts it like this. “Consider the next 3 weeks as a bridge between an old way of seeing things and a new understanding of a bigger picture and how everything fits (or doesn’t) in that picture. This time will bring interesting insights through looking back or within about prior relationships, past goals and ambitions, and why certain things came down the way they did…” “This  allows us to take a look back at how we’re using Aquarius energy in our lives, see who our allies and friends truly are, open to a larger vision of cooperative synthesis, and say goodbye to old illusions”.
